Nintendo NX Cartridges Could be a Thing, Replacement for Optical Drives?
Another day, and yet another rumor. If the interpretation of a Japanese Financial website Money-Link is any good, Nintendo NX cartridges could be a reality. Confused already? I was too but it all will make some sense once you have the details.
Back in 2015, there was a rumor that Nintendo might be ditching the optical drive support for game storage. Back then we thought that it might be that they just want to make a digital ecosystem removing the need of an optical drive. There were speculations too that we might see 3DS like cartridges in action yet again. Feels too unreal, right?
Well, new hints have surfaced supporting the probable existence of Nintendo NX cartridges. The hint comes from the statements of Macronix, a company that has been making chips for Nintendo for a long time. This is what they have to say:
“Macronix’s ROM chips are usually supplied to videogame console maker, Nintendo. Although the sales is in off season during the first quarter, the revenue is similar compared with the same period last year. Wu Miin suggested that as Nintendo had just announced it will release a new generation console in March next year, and the console will be launched at the same time in Japan, America and Europe, so ROM’s sales is expected to increase in the latter half of this year, and it will have a large growth potential.”
That’s not it. It has also come to the attention that Macronix is also testing a new 32nm ROM chip which is most probably not for 3DS as it uses the 75nm chimps. So why are they testing these new ROM chips? The obvious interpretation could be that they are making it for Nintendo NX. So yes, Nixtendo NX cartridges could be we can expect.
As far as ROM sales are concerned, Macronix is also expecting a boost in 4th quarter coinciding with the release of Nintendo NX:
Wu Miin noted that before the launch of Nintendo’s new platform, the sales of ROM is expected to remain unchanged in this year, but there is growth potential. In respect of NOR Flash business, market share in the global market has reached 21% last year, ranked second. It is expected to climb to first rank in a quarter next year. Macronix expects the sales of 75 nm, or below, NOR Flash process products will increase to 50% and more high-capacity products will be sold. Revenue of automobile sector will continue to increase.
While these speculations do add up a bit logically but all of this could very well be for the console itself (BIOS purpose for instance). So yes, while we don’t get any confirmation, it’s a wild rumor for the time being. What do you think? Do you think Nintendo NX cartridges can be practical? Or this could be just a hardware component and nothing more?
