Uncharted 4 Benches Donut Drake; Devs Weren’t “Comfortable”
One of the fan-favorite characters from the Uncharted universe, Donut Drake is not going to be among us for the last journey of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End.
This (very) sad news has been confirmed by the game’s writer and director at Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann while discussing other comparatively less exciting aspects of the game.
Druckmann says that the reason why they have decided not to include the fattie in the game this time is because the developers have “matured” beyond that and because they think that laughing at someone’s expense in not what they want in their game.
Also, the developers think that even after looking at it from a variety of angles, they were not comfortable with using Donut Drake in Uncharted 4:
I didn’t want to have a laugh at someone’s expense. I thought we’d matured beyond that. We actually had the whole thing modelled and in there [but] decided to make the call not to do it. We had a big debate about it and kind of approached it from all kinds of angles and decided we weren’t comfortable having it in our game.
For those who do not know (really? I don’t believe you!) Donut Drake has previously featured in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Uncharted 4 will be the only game that doesn’t have the massively overweight version of Nathan Drake.
It would have been a much more fun online experience if he was there, but I guess we’ll have to make do with the gym junkie instead.
