When it was revealed that there would be no Assassin’s Creed release this year it came as no surprise. It appears though that this may be an end to the yearly cycle of releases.

Speaking at the Ubisoft Investor Day, Yves Guillemot the chief exec of Ubisoft revealed that they are rethinking the strategy for releases. Though he did reveal that there would still be regular games, just not on such a strict schedule.

Talking about the Assassin’s Creed release he revealed “The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis”. The idea of this is to give the developers the time to work on the property and the mechanics of the game to take it to “another level”.

He also added “What we are seeing today is promising. We will be able to come on a regular basis [but] we can’t say every year.” While this may seem a set-back for Assassin’s Creed this year, and beyond it is actually good news for players. Especially if a focus is on getting the games right.

Also in the presentation Alain Martinez the chief financial officer did hint that in the future annual releases could make a return:

“We have focused one of our best teams behind what we are working on Assassin’s Creed. We have given them all the time for releasing something that we hope to be exceptional. We are setting up rules so that they will have enough time to polish the game and come with something really exceptional, so this is what we have for our first priority.

Then after that, if we feel like we are in the right direction and that we can continue the path and we have enough innovation for the next one, we might come with the next one in the next year. But it’s no longer something that will be set up every year.”

Although Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was a strong release for the franchise, it is true that it was haunted by many of Unity’s issues. With more time, hopefully Ubisoft can provide the fans with a stronger game in the end.
