Are Dota 2 and League of Legends Feasible on Consoles?
MOBA games have been around for a long time on PC and it was only recently we started to see this genre appear on consoles as well. Epic is working on Paragon and Hi-Rez came forward with SMITE on Xbox One. We are also hearing rumors of its arrival on PS4.
Since this genre is getting stronger on consoles, is it possible to bring two of biggest MOBA games – DOTA 2 and League of Legends – to Xbox One and PS4? This is a very interesting question and surely many console gamers thought about it at least once.
Well, the short answer is NO!
MOBA games are possible on consoles but if you wish to specifically play League of Legends and Dota 2, that may never happen. These games are just not feasible on these platforms. Hardware is not the issue as both Xbox One and PS4 are more than powerful to handle both games.
The biggest and only problem are controls. Unless there is proper support for a mouse and keyboard, or a controller with at least 20 buttons, LoL and Dota 2 won’t work.
Let us discuss issues one by one. First, camera and the locked/free model that MOBA and RTS games use won’t work with a limited button layout. Developers will have to choose one. SMITE doesn’t have the camera issue that’s why it works on Xbox One.
We aren’t saying that porting these games is impossible, but they can never feel as good as they do on PC. Most MOBAs we see today are built from the ground up with PC in mind. In the case of Paragon and SMITE, devs knew they were going to be on consoles so the games are designed accordingly.
The biggest difference you’ll notice is the third-person view these games have, which makes it far easier.
Gameplay features such as skill-shots need to be done in very timely manner. There are just too many elements involved and a controller has very limited amount of buttons. So binding skills, heals, ward and many other elements isn’t possible.
There is also the issue of response times. A keyboard and mouse has far better response times then controllers do. Thus, you may not be able to deliver moves at the right time during an intense team battle.
Those considerable amount of short keys in these game would make it next to impossible for developers to make it work. In order to bring League of Legends and Dota 2 to PS4 and Xbox One, some serious dumbing down of the controls is required.
It is safe to say that MOBAs can only exist on consoles if they are built from the ground up. You can not just port games that are tailor-made for PC to consoles.
