League of Legends 2016 Ranked Season: Dynamic Ranked & Rewards Update
League of Legends 2016 Ranked Season starts at 2AM PST tomorrow i.e. January 20, and Riot Games has been detailing some of the updates that have been made to the system.
Riot explains that players “wanted a more competitive experience they could play with friends that lacked the rigid barriers to entry and low queue population of Ranked Teams” and Dynamic Queues was their answer to this.
Which is where “you can queue up with as many friends as you’d like, as long as all party members are within one tier of each other.” This way Solo/Duo and Dynamic became two variants in Ranked play. In case of the 2016 Ranked Season, Riot is “kicking off” with Dynamic Queues.
They say that simply adding another queue and segmenting the players in two would have caused a lot more issues for the community:
Segmenting players can be extremely risky because of potential queue time and match quality issues. These risks compound on servers with smaller populations that can only sustain two queues (currently Normal Blind & Ranked Solo/Duo in those regions).
However, it doesn’t end there. In the coming weeks they are also going to add a new Solo Ranked Queue while there will be no Duos and Ranked Teams queue will skip this League of Legends Ranked Season.
On the topic of Ranked Rewards, the developers say that due to the new changes that have been made to the choice of queues they are still thinking about what to do. However, you will probably get most of the Ranked Rewards in Dynamic.
Some matchmaking updates have also been made:
- Premade 4’s are now matching with other Premade 4’s in 98% of their matches, while Premade 5’s are matching with other Premade 5s in 96% of their matches. These numbers are up from the mid-80’s at launch.
- We’re seeing queue times for high-skill and pro players drop dramatically and are working on further improvements.
- Most players should now be seeing more competitive (where competitive means each team is equally likely to win) matches compared to the Solo/Duo Ranked queue from last season.
Which ones of these changes do you agree with?
