Sega Plans Aplenty For Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary

By   /   Jan 12, 2016

Sonic the Hedgehog is undoubtedly one of the most iconic characters in videogame history. 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the blue colored, ultra-pacey hedgehog, and to celebrate this silver jubilee, Sega has a year of celebrations planned.

Much of the activity is primarily focused around the popular Sonic Boom TV series. The series is expected to expand to the likes of Russia, Spain, and Turkey this year.

Sega is also taking steps to categorize or differentiate various Sonic universes that have emerged in the past 25 years. Classic Sonic is now described as ‘Pixel Sonic’, while Sonic in the Archie comic series is now called the ‘Comic Book Sonic.’ Then, there is the obvious current-running ‘Sonic Boom’ that is separate in-terms of marketing and merchandising.

We already have a Sonic game coming up this year, called Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Hopefully, in the celebrations of the spin-to-win hedgehog’s 25th Anniversary, they’ll announce another title as well.

For now, to celebrate the year, Sega has confirmed plenty of merchandising for Bioworld, Archie Comics and First 4 Figures. These companies will produce toys, books, magazines, clothing, and collectables to support the event. Sega says they’ll also be joined by other official partners in the near future.
