In today’s video, we discuss something subjective – are video game remasters good or bad? And...
Has Star Wars Battlefront Really Been a Big Success?
With Star Wars being so huge right now you would expect Star Wars Battlefront to be a huge success. While EA seem happy with the release, there are still questions as to how successful the game actually is.
Looking at EA Vice President Patrick Söderlund’s comments on the game he states:
“Star Wars Battlefront is the biggest launch of a Star Wars video game ever and is the largest digital launch in the history of EA.”
But this doesn’t seem to be enough for many looking at the sales figures for the game, especially when Star Wars games don’t actually sell that well. There is plenty of debate, including in the video above as to how successful the release has actually been. It is well worth watching this discussion as it provides a reasonable dissection of sales and balanced discussion of the results. With the outcome being that the game may actually be doing quite well, if digital sales are as strong as they appear to be.
Selling 1.5 million copies in its first week may not exactly be spectacular, but it is still impressive. With the game underperforming at GameStop, as have some other big titles, it appears to be time to question just how successful the Battlefront is has come.
One thing that may hold people back from buying the game will of course be the online aspect of it, some people may be put off by that fact that the single player is just an afterthought. Also we do have to take into account the DLC plans for the game, and there is plenty of it coming. As the game grows more people will start to take notice of what it offers. As stated in the video above, the strategy could be similar to Destiny here, and we’ve seen the popularity of the Bungie game. The more the game grows, the more interesting it may become as the modes start to feel more fleshed out and new maps are added.
We also have to note the games that have been released around the same time as Battlefront. With Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Halo 5: Guardians, Need for Speed, and Rise of the Tomb Raider being released around the same time there has been huge competition. This is bound to impact the sales for the game on initial release.
As we move into the festive period and people start to look for games for Christmas presents, Star Wars is going to be a name that stands out. There will be plenty of gamers with this one on their Christmas lists. It will be interesting to watch how Star Wars Battlefront sales hold up, especially after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With so many big titles fighting for attention though, the battle is going to be fierce.
The Force could still be strong with this one still…
