Kinect Still has a ‘Vast’ Number of Xbox One Users Says Microsoft
With the Xbox One sometimes it can be easy to forget that the Kinect is even still connected to some devices. It turns out though that some people still use it, though the focus is not about games anymore.
Speaking to Polygon Mike Nichols, the chief marketing officer for Xbox revealed that Microsoft know that there are still Kinect users:
“Overall, we don’t break down how many console users have Kinect and how many don’t,” said Mike Nichols, chief marketing officer for Xbox. “That’s a level of granularity we don’t want to get into.”
On what it is used for now, it is more about the user interface than actually gaming:
“I can say that the people with Kinect still make up a very, very sizable portion and that those people do use it quiet frequently. Less for games, but a lot more for biometric sign-in and user interface.”
Even with the confidence that there are still users, defeat on making all user have the device has been conceded:
“Now we’re not designing for everyone who has it or everyone doesn’t have it. We’re designing for a good chunk who have it and use it and some new customers who now have decided to get an Xbox One who don’t have a Kinect, at least not yet.”
This will be the case with Cortana when it finally comes to the Xbox One. Users will be able to use the connect to vocally make searches using the service, though this functionality will also be available through the use of headset and microphone as well.
