Uncharted 4 Devs Explain Why the Game isn’t Open World

Uncharted 4 Devs

We have know Uncharted games for not being open world, but for some of the fans it was a disappointment that Uncharted 4 is also not going to have an open world.

People have been questioning why this is so, and Naughty Dog’s community strategist Arne Meyer was asked the same thing.

In his reply he clarified that the idea was to prioritize the narrative and story elements of the game which would not have been possible if the game was completely open world.

One of the things that we’re always focused on is that we want to tell a set story, and with a particular amount of pacing. So, if you introduce too much player choice, then players are going to go off and do the side missions and we’re not really pulling them through the story, and affecting the pace.

However, he did reiterate that there still are some open world elements in Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End by referring to the popular E3 demo that featured a jeep chase.

If you look at the Uncharted 4 and the demo from E3, where you’re going downhill in a jeep, there’s more than one path down there; we are trying to give you a little bit more choice. But, at the end of the day, it’s going to affect the pacing of the story, and that’s something that is of utmost importance to us.

Are you content with what Naughty Dog has chosen for you with regards to Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End?
