Nintendo Considering a Return to Movies
In a move that may strike fear into anybody who has seen Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Nintendo are open to returning to the movie world. Hopefully they’ll have more success than in the past.
Joking about the Mario film aside, Nintendo have already made tentative steps back into movies already. We’ve already seen Bowser in Wreck-it Ralph as well as Donkey Kong in the awful Pixels. Now Nintendo are hinting that some other characters could be making their way to the big screen once again.
While he was speaking to Fortune on the subject, Shigeru Miyamoto had this to say:
“We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together—or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?’,” Miyamoto told Fortune at this year’s E3. “Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies. … I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.”
Most importantly he said:
“As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future”
Which appears to be the clue that movies may be coming soon. In truth, if we can see Mario and some other Nintendo characters in Wreck it Ralph 2 this would be huge news.
