The Witcher 3 Was Almost Split Into Two Games Due to Its Massive Size
The Witcher 3: Wild hunt is a massive game with so much to do, apart from the main story, there are really detailed side-quests, Witcher Contracts and not to mentioned the highly addictive Gwent.
It the beginning, developers weren’t even sure if it should be an open world game. They didn’t have dev kits for PS4 and Xbox One, and it took them a year to start work in The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt RED says that “people were really shocked that we wanted to do so much.” However, Tomaszkiewicz and CDPR head Adam Badowski convince everyone and the result is Game of the Year.
But development of the game wasn’t easy, too many characters, story arcs, quests etc; so at one point it felt like The Witcher 3 will have to be split into two games.
There were too many characters, there were too many different super-complicated story plots like those elves, The Wild Hunt. For a while we thought The Witcher 3 would be that big we have to split it into two parts, so [the series] won’t be a trilogy – and the plan had always been to do a trilogy. We were very close. But I wanted to have a trilogy. A trilogy is cool, a trilogy looks good! It doesn’t look like another… Assassin’s Creed game. It was our initial concept – and we need to be in line with our previous decisions.
When I played The Witcher 3, it really did surprise me how developers managed to put all of that stuff into one game. CD Projekt has done an amazing job with The Witcher and hopefully, they’ll consider another installment.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
