Just How Deep are the Role-playing Elements in Horizon: Zero Dawn?

With a game like Horizon: Zero Dawn it looks ambitious, but fans tend to want to know what type of game it actually is. Will it be a role-playing game or more of an action adventure?

While talking to Gamesradar, Guerrilla Games co-founder and managing director Hermen Hulst was asked, just how deep the role-playing elements go into the game, are they comparable to something like Witcher 3 or the Elder Scrolls games?

“I guess you’re wondering where we are on that spectrum of, on the one side more action-orientated games like Assassin’s Creed, and on the other hand you have your Elder Scrolls and these kinds of series. I think we’re in-between. We have elements in both directions, and that probably puts us somewhere in between.”

What he did admit though was that the depths of the role-playing elements couldn’t really be delved into until they were able to show more of the game. This will be something that we’ll have to wait for, as they are not ready to reveal this just yet.

When asked about the level of puzzle solving that comes into defeating the dinosaurs, his answer was:

“When you see a demonstration like you saw at E3, you can imagine in the heat of the combat it’s fairly difficult to read exactly how to take on these enemies with all this weaponry and the combat abilities that they have. But we will provide you with the tools to prepare yourself for battle… that’s what I can say about it at this point! “

While it is always interesting to hear about games early in development, it can often be annoying that they have to keep so much a secret, especially with games like Horizon: Zero Dawn.
