Project Morpheus Is Ready to Go, Waiting On Software Support: Sony R&D Engineer
It’s been a long time since we first heard of Project Morpheus and frankly, by now the wait is just getting annoying for me. The hardware is being showed at various events and from what I have seen, it looks finalized.
However, there is still no official word regarding a release date, but Sony mentioned it coming out in 2016. Well, we’ll see.
Anyways, what is going on with Project Morpheus and why isn’t Sony shipping, what looks like, the final product? The question was asked to Sony R&D engineer Dennis Castleman, who confirmed what I suspected all along, the hardware is “ready to go.”
But, they are waiting for stronger software support before shipping the device.
I’ve been working on Sony’s project Morpheus for 3 years, it’s going to go to market in 2016. It’s a bit different for things like cell phones or established technologies. When I was designing televisions it was usually 18 months to get a new model into production. A VR HMD is a bit different it also takes time for the component vendors to ramp-up for million unit volumes.
In our case the HMD hardware is ready to go, we’re just waiting for the game titles to catch up with the hardware.
Now the question is, will software be able to catch-up with Sony’s HMD until 2016? Only time will tell.
