Ingress Developer Niantic Labs Parting Ways with Google
Having reached more than 12 million users together with Ingress, it looks like the time of Niantic Labs and Google together is almost over.
The former has announced they will soon be turning into an independent company while Google will only retain its position as a collaborator and an investor.
Niantic Labs is becoming an independent company. We’ll be taking our unique blend of exploration and fun to even bigger audiences with some amazing new partners joining Google as collaborators and backers. Niantic will be building on the success of Ingress, which has been downloaded more than 12M times, has attracted more than 250,000 people to live events around the world, and has inspired users to collectively walk the distance from the earth to the sun while playing, exploring and discovering.
While this means they will get more freedom to do projects they want, it also means that Ingress users should be cautious because the game has over 12 million users that means a lot of server load.
We are not sure how that part is going to go down in the future.
The last time Google and Niantic Labs’ name came up together was when the were criticized for adding Nazi concentration camps in Ingress for which Google apologized later.
So far the Ingress developers have not shared anything about what they are going to work on after becoming independent from Google but rest assured we will tell you as soon as something comes up.
