Portable Steam Console ‘Steamboy’ Shows Up at Gamescom, Is It Legit?
There has been lots of speculation and plenty of rumors of the attractive but skepticism inducing Steamboy handheld console, but interestingly enough there was as booth for the system at Gamescon.
Apparently, Steamboy is very real, and it’s got a rather fitting name: SMACH Zero. The handheld is to be available for preorder from November 10, and we even have the system specs for this Steam based handheld console.
- AMD embedded G-Series SoC “Steppe Eagle”, with Jaguar-based CPU and GCN-based Radeon graphics.
- 4 GB RAM
- 32GB internal memory
- SD Card Slot
- USB OTG
- 5” 1280×720 touch screen
- Configurable tactile gamepads
This console is also supposed to have a “Pro” version, which will have 4G connectivity. Okay, this does seem too good to be true, but the fact that there was indeed a booth for the console at Gamescom raises many eyebrows.

Either this is a hoax that has continued on for way too long, or it’s just some very bad marketing by a rather unknown company.
Of course, it’s currently advised not to make any preorders (which will cost you $299), but if you’re brave enough to do it, you’ll get the handheld towards the final quarter of 2016.
Of course, you shouldn’t expect this to compete against the Nintendo 3DS or the PlayStation Vita if it is legitimate, but it doesn’t really have to, because it’s targeted at a very specific market of PC oriented gamers who don’t want an immovable gaming rig nor do they want to spend loads of cash in making one.
Hopefully we’ll get some clarification regarding the console’s legitimacy sooner rather than later. I’d advise you to clinch your wallets tightly till then.
