Fallout Shelter Couldn’t Be Released Before Fallout 4 Announcement, Says Pete Hines
The biggest reveal at E3 was without a doubt the new Fallout game. Fans have been waiting for years for this and it will finally be in our hands later this year. Alongside Fallout 4, Bethesda announced Fallout Shelter, which released on the same day.
The title is Bethesda’s attempt to bring Fallout franchise to mobile platforms. Soon after its released the game topped the charts on App Store and generated millions of dollars in revenue. It is a perfect way to keep ourselves busy until the release of Fallout 4.
During a recent interview, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said that releasing Fallout Shelter at the same time as revealing Fallout 4, was integral to Shelter’s success.
If we tried to do this last year without announcing what Bethesda Game Studios was doing [Fallout 4] and said, ‘Oh we’re doing a game and it’s on mobile and it’s called Fallout Shelter,’ we’d probably get lynched, right?’.There would be pitchforks at the gate. ‘That’s not the Fallout we asked for, you bastards!’ But doing it this way, they’re like, ‘I’m getting what I want and oh, by the way, while I wait here’s this other free thing that’s fun to play.
Bethesda had the right idea as fans may not have been too happy to see Fallout Shelter if they didn’t know what else Bethesda is working on.
So yes, some may have brought pitchforks at the gate.
Fallout Shelter is currently available on iOS but will soon be released for Android as well. As for Fallout 4, the game is heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 11.
