Guerilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn is as Exciting as it’s Perplexing

Horizon Zero Dawn open world

The moment Guerilla Games were invited on E3 2015 stage, I knew we were in for another Killzone follow-up, but what followed left me both excited and perplexed!

Lo and behold! Enter Horizon: Zero Dawn; a game set in a vibrant and lush world infested by behemoth mechanized creatures. Shortly after a brief yet beautiful CGI trailer, we were put in the middle of an extensive gameplay demonstration.

Zero Dawn lets players assume the role of a huntress named Aloy equipped with metallic bow and arrow (or may be made from some kind of an alloy) who seemed to draw energy from the fallen creatures.

Even among the biggies such as The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Halo; Horizon: Zero Dawn put one of the best shows at the E3 along with Unravel.

In case you missed the six-and-a-half minutes of sheer awesomeness, I recommend checking out the video attached below and even if you have watched it; well, watch it again, it’s totally worth it:

And while you are at it, pay heed to the lighting, the foliage, the environment, weather conditions, Aloy’s attire, and basically everything you can. Here’s how Sony PR describes the game:

Explore a vibrant and lush world inhabited by mysterious mechanized creatures. Embark on a compelling, emotional journey and unravel mysteries of tribal societies, ancient artifacts and advanced technologies that will determine the fate of this planet, and of life itself.

Despite the game having a role-playing feel to it, the gameplay demonstration that we witnessed appeared to be sheer action-adventure and hack and slash rather a role-playing game.

Though I would like the game to turn out to be a RPG, I would equally be impressed with an action-adventure!

And while we wait for more information, feast your eyes on the newly released screenshots:

Furthermore, here are some key features of the game:

A Lush Post-Apocalyptic World
How have machines dominated this world, and what is their purpose? What happened to the civilization here before? Scour every corner of a realm filled with ancient relics and mysterious buildings in order to uncover your past and unearth the many secrets of a forgotten land.

Nature and Machines Collide
Horizon Zero Dawn juxtaposes two contrasting elements, taking a vibrant world rich with beautiful nature and filling it with awe-inspiring highly advanced technology. This marriage creates a dynamic combination for both exploration and gameplay.

Defy Overwhelming Odds
The foundation of combat in Horizon Zero Dawn is built upon the speed and cunning of Aloy versus the raw strength and size of the machines. In order to overcome a much larger and technologically superior enemy, Aloy must use every ounce of her knowledge, intelligence, and agility to survive each encounter.

Cutting Edge Open World Tech
Stunningly detailed forests, imposing mountains, and atmospheric ruins of a bygone civilization meld together in a landscape that is alive with changing weather systems and a full day/night cycle.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is scheduled to arrive sometime next year in 2016 exclusively for Playstation 4. We are sure to learn more in coming months.
