Black Ops 3 Studio Head Says Three-Year Development Cycle Leaves Room For Risks

Call of Duty Black Ops 3

Call of Duty has been around for over a decade and it is amazing how it still keeps selling millions of copies and making billions in revenue each year. Same is expected from this year’s installment of Call of Duty, known as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Treyarch is developing the game and are aiming to bring us the best possible Black Ops experience they can. Development of Call of Duty games is hard and each year fans expect a bigger and better game. According to Treyarch’s head Mark Lamia, there is a three- year development cycle in place for Call of Duty games.

The cycle allows developers to take certain kind of risks with these games.

Without a three-year cycle, we wouldn’t have been able to take the kind of risks that we took on this game, frankly. We would not have been able to overhaul our entire AI system that supports the kind of engagements in an open-playspace like we have.

He further explained how the three-year cycle helped them with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

We would not have been able to overhaul our rendering technology to make it as advanced as it is to be able to render the size of the environments or the volume and density of activity and art in it in that amount of time. We wouldn’t have been able to overhaul our entire movement system because what goes along with that is a bunch of iteration on map development that took almost a year in and of itself.

Each year we listen to developers explain how great the next installment will be and how they have made so many improvements. Fans keep complaining how the series has become stagnant but like I said, it keeps selling more and more each year, which is a bit odd.

Personally, I think there isn’t much innovation you can do with first person shooters. In the end, it comes down to you holding a gun and shooting people. No matter what someone feels about COD games, you will have to admit they are indeed taking risks now.

After Ghosts, the series does seem to be heading into a new direction. Let’s see, where will it end-up.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is slated for a November 6 release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
