Asteroids Outpost Enters Early Access, More Atari Reboots Planned
Last month Atari had announced to reboot on of their three decade old franchises with the release of Asteroids Outpost.
They teamed up with Salty Games for the reboot and now it has been announced that the game is entering its early access stage with a select number of gamers.
Todd Shallbetter the Chief Operating Officer at Atari said that partnering with other studios to revisit their portfolio was actually part of a bigger strategy that was probably going to continue with other Atari titles like Tempest and Missile Command:
This is part of our new strategy. We are going to be teaming up with young and innovative studios to take a refreshing look at each game from our extensive portfolio. Releasing Asteroids: Outpost through the Early Access program will also help us get feedback from the community. Asteroids is the first of a long series of re-births, and we are considering doing the same for our other iconic games such as Warlords, Adventure, Tempest, Missile Command and many more.
Seeing how the company has a very large portfolio and titles that even the older gamers have played when they were kids, it would be great if they can really pull of getting some good reboots out of the games.
As far as Asteroids Outpost itself is concerned, the developers say that it will be giving a new feeling to the longstanding IP by “combining survival and crafting gameplay mechanics in a multiplayer intergalactic setting.”
It was also announced that in order to commemorate the franchise, they will put Asteroids Outpost on a 34 percent discount on Steam. This means you will be able to get your hands on the game for just $19.79.
