Konami Responds to Rumors of Hideo Kojima’s Departure

Rumors circulating on the web since morning suggest that Metal Gear Solid creator and director Hideo Kojima may be leaving the company. Either that or the developer may already have taken his leave.

The ruckus began earlier today upon the discovery of the Kojima Productions logo being removed from the Metal Gear Solid website. Additionally, the official Kojima Productions’ website was also redirecting viewers to Konami’s Metal Gear Solid portal.

Finally, references to both Kojima Productions and Hideo Kojima have also been removed from artwork of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and its recent prologue Ground Zeroes on Konami’s website.

When asked for a comment, a Konami representative said: “Konami Digital Entertainment, including Mr. Kojima, will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements.”

A few hours ago, a followup saw the publisher give a more detailed statement where it referred to an organizational restructure announced by the company earlier this month.

“As we have already announced, we are shifting our production structure to a headquarters-controlled system, in order to establish a steadfast operating base capable of responding to the rapid market changes that surround our digital entertainment business,” read the statement. “Konami Digital Entertainment (including Mr. Kojima), will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements.”

Earlier this month, Hideo Kojima stated that this would be his last Metal Gear Solid title, a statement that the developer has cited before in his career as well. However, as things have unfolded, is it possible that he was merely referring to his departure?
