Free PS4 Multiplayer Weekend Announced for North America

Another free multiplayer weekend has been announced by Sony for the PS4, but which will be exclusive to North America.

The event will run from Friday, 12:01 AM PT to Sunday, 11:59 PM. During this time, all PlayStation 4 owners will be able to gain full access to the PlayStation Network to play games online.

Note that, you’ll only be able to access multiplayer free of charge. Users will not be able to take advantage of any other benefits of a PlayStation Plus subscription, such as discounts in the store and the Instant Game Collection titles.

Sony’s new console made it mandatory to have a PlayStation Plus membership in order to play titles online. In contrast, the PlayStation 3 had no such restrictions. The Xbox on the other hand has always been charging for online play, through its Xbox Live services.

Sony’s reasoning to change gears this generation was the cost.

“Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that’s the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service,” said Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida back then.

A yearly subscription to PlayStation Plus can be purchased for $49.99.
