Unity 5 Launches Worldwide for Free

Unity 5 is the latest game engine from Unity Technologies and is now available globally for free, the company announced at GDC 2015.

In an accompanying press release, Unity Technologies stated that the new engine features “massive graphics improvements” over its previous iterations and also includes an expanded editor feature set. In the graphics department, Unity 5 boasts physically based shading, real-time global illumination with Enlighten, and reflection probes.

Alongside the game engine, the company also announced Unity Cloud Build, a process that will enable developers to increase their productivity by “leveraging the power of cloud computing.” It will be interesting to see how this fares up in the future, where all major platform holders are looking to somehow make cloud gaming a staple of the industry.

In a statement passed by CEO John Riccitiello, he said that the company wants everyone to have access to Unity 5 “which is why we’ve increased the value of our royalty-free licenses.” The standard version is free for everyone, but the professional edition of Unity 5 will cost $75. This includes Unity Cloud Build Pro and Team License.

This has been quite a week for developers, and specially indie developers at that. Prior to today’s announcement, Epic made its Unreal Engine 4 free for everyone.
