World of Warcraft to Fight Ebola; $1.9 Million Raised with Argi
Diseases can do surprising things to the people. For instance, when the internet got wind of the Ebola virus it resulted in a very odd profit making opportunity for a game called Plague Inc. which got way more popular after the Ebola scare than it was before.
However, they have other effects too, like bringing together the community for a good cause. That is exactly what BLizzard did with the help of the World of Warcraft community.
It was announced back in November that an in-game pet Argi will be up for adoptions. The proceeds of all the purchases were to be sent for health care services in the fight against Ebola virus through Red Cross.
After two months of fund raising, the World of Warcraft fans have gathered a handsome amount of $1.9 million. The official battle.net website has a post where they have explained how the money is going to be sent to Africa for the relief efforts:
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of World of Warcraft players around the world who purchased the Argi pet, we’ve raised a total of more than 1.9 million USD to support the ongoing Ebola relief efforts in Africa by the Red Cross. In December, we announced that for every Argi purchased by December 31, 2014, 100% of the adoption fee would be going to assist in aiding in the fight against this deadly disease – and the community embraced this cute little intergalactic nibbler, helping out a great cause in the process.
In the end they thanked the community of World of Warcraft again for becoming a part of this and made a difference.
It is gestures like this that our world needs these days; with the countless issues that we are facing from diseases to terrorism and from climatic changes to corruption, if we stand together for a cause and do our part, there is nothing that can stop us from eradicating the problem.
Well done World of Warcraft fans!
