The SpongeBob Movie Rakes in $35M, Jupiter Ascending Makes $22M
I have always bee a fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, and when I heard that The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was coming I just had to add it on the to-do list.
To say it in the simplest of words, it was “the SpongeBob experience” that you guys have been looking for. It is nonsensical, hilarious and loud; just about what you would expect from it.
This has led to an impressive start for the movie at the box office. According to the latest reports, Paramount Pictures have already raked in $35 million from the opening that spanned on 3,641 theatres in the United States.
Not just that, the movie has surpassed other releases that were much bigger in terms of budget than The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was. It is now at number one in the US box office! I am thinking it has something to do with the fact that it is a sequel to the 2004 release The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
When we talk about other high budget movies that it has beaten, Jupiter Ascending comes first in line. Warner Bros. have spent around $175 million on this one, but apparently the Channing Tatum starer is not going much further than $20 million in the opening.
Even in its fourth week, American Sniper was able to do better than Jupiter Rising by raking in $22 million. This makes their total a hefty $280 million!
Sadly all the dreams of matching The Matrix’s performance have been subdued a third time for Warner Bros. Cloud Atlas and Speed Runner being the other two movies that failed to make that mark.
Have you watched Jupiter Rising or The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water? What do you think of them?
