The Elder Scrolls Online Removes Mandatory Subscription

By   /   Jan 22, 2015

The Elder Scrolls Online is dropping its current subscription model effective March, at which point it will don a new subtitle to become The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.

The game however will still not be free-to-play. You’ll have to purchase the game if you’re interested in playing, but upon owning a copy, you’ll be able to play online without having to worry about any subscription cost.

According to Bethesda Softworks, players will be granted full access to all previously released updates and contents, including the new Champion and Justice systems. Those already playing the game will automatically be upgraded to the new version.

Those wanting something extra from the game will have the option of going for “ESO Plus,” an optional premium subscription model for The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. It will be available in 30, 90, and 180-day durations, and offer the following:

  • 1500 complimentary crowns per 30-day membership period.
  • Access to all downloadable content.
  • 10% bonus to experience earned.
  • 10% faster crafting research times.
  • 10% increase to crafting inspiration gain.
  • 10% bonus to gold acquisition.

The downloadable content for the game will come in the shape of new optional regions. Buying a copy of the game does not grant you access to these regions and which have to be purchased separately.

ESO Plus subscribers however will have access to all these optional regions. In the case of an expired membership, access to the regions will be revoked but you’ll be allowed to keep whatever loot you’ve collected from there.

Bethesda explained that these new areas aren’t restricted by levels and can be played by anyone of any level.

As for those who are either paying for the game right now or have been in the past, Bethesda is offering rewards for their loyalty.

Current Subscribers

  • 500 Crowns
  • 100 Crowns for every month subscribed
  • 1500 Crowns per 30 days remaining on the subscription

Former Players

  • 500 Crowns
  • 100 Crowns for every month subscribed

New Players

  • 500 Crowns

The transition to the new model is expected to take place on March 17. The game will retain its $59.99 price, which does sound attractive when you realize there’s no monthly subscription attached.
