Microsoft is the Publisher of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Not Square Enix

Microsoft will be acting as publisher for Rise of the Tomb Raider on the Xbox One, a company executive confirmed earlier today.

“Yes we are publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider,” said Xbox marketing manager Aaron Greenberg while responding to a fan on Twitter.

Microsoft willing to handle marketing and distribution costs tells us how far the agreement with Square Enix has come. The significant investment makes sense when you think about Microsoft’s intention of making Rise of the Tomb Raider go up against Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End next fall.

Microsoft as the main publisher also puts up a question mark over the future ports of the other platforms. The company now also has pretty much the say in when the game breaks its platform exclusivity.

Currently both Microsoft and Square Enix have mentioned Rise of the Tomb Raider as a “holiday 2015” exclusive. Neither is ready to say just how long the Xbox exclusivity will last.

In a statement passed to GameSpot, a Square Enix representative said that Microsoft is providing support across the entire development and publishing pipeline for Rise of the Tomb Raider. No comments were made about the PlayStation 4 version.

It’s worth mentioning here that the news has come shortly after Capcom announced that its new Street Fighter V will be releasing for just the PlayStation 4 and PC, with the added feature of cross-platform play. Could it mean that Rise of the Tomb Raider isn’t going to see a release on PlayStation platform?
