Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire EV Training Guide – How to Earn EVs Fast

By   /   Dec 4, 2014

EVs in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire stand for Effort Values and varies from one Pokemon to other. Effort Points are earned alongside Experience Points.

Every Pokemon you take down will reward with EVs in addition to Experience Points. Once again, this value varies with different Pokemon. For every EV, players can gain 1 Stat Point.

For more help in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, read our Contest Spectaculars Guide, Combat Tips and How to Train Your Pokemon.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire EV Training

Each Pokemon in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire has six stats: special attack, special defense, attack speed, attack, HP, and defense. Players are unable to assign more than 252 EVs to a single stat and more than 510 EVs across all stats.

In this way, you can fully max out any two stats of your choice. In case you fully maximize a stat, your Pokemon will have 63 more points than a Pokemon which has 0 EVs assigned to that particular stat.

Due to this fact, it is extremely important that you assign your EVs carefully – it is the only line between life and death.

EV Farming

Similar to Pokemon X and Y, you will encounter hordes in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Your trainer will randomly bump into a horde of five Pokemon. These Pokemon will not only allow you to find a Shiny Pokemon or a Pokemon with a hidden ability, but also farm for EVs.

For instance, defeating a horde of Shuppet will allow you to net five EVs in Attack. Luckily, in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, each horde has a specific region where it can be found.

Check below for locations of different hordes that can be found across Hoenn:

Whismur
This horde provides you with 1 HP Effort Value.
Location: Rusturf Tunnel

Shuppet
This horde provides you with 1 Attack Effort Value.
Location: Mt. Pyre

Sandshrew
This horde provides you with 1 Defense Effort Value.
Location: Route 111

Oddish
This horde provides you with 1 Special Attack Effort Value.
Location: Route 119

Swablu
This horde provides you with 1 Special Defense Effort Value.
Location: Route 115 – in the northernmost edge and you will require surf

Swablu/Lotad
This horde provides you with 1 Special Defense Effort Value.
Location: Route 114 – this is only exclusive to Alpha Sapphire

Zigzagoon/Wingull
This horde provides you with 1 Speed Effort Value.
Location: Route 104

One of the most important tip to keep in mind is that you require a Pokemon which knows Sweet Scent of your team. The reason I say Sweet Scent is important is because you are guaranteed to encounter a horde with it – 100 per cent.

There are a couple of Pokemon which know this ability and can be acquired early in the game:

  • Oddish: this Level-5 Pokemon can be encountered at Route #110, #117, #119, #120, and Safari Zone
  • Surskit: this Level-13 Pokemon can be encountered at Route #102, #111, #114, and #117

How to Speed Up EV Gain

There are certain special items which tend to increase your Pokemon’s EV gain by considerable amount. All you are required to do is to find and hold these items before acquiring EV.

One such special item is Macho Brace which decreases your Pokemon’s speed, but increases the EV gain by 2x. With Macho Braces equipped, you will gain 10 EVs instead of five for taking on a horde. You will be able to find it on Route #111.
