SMITE World Championship Prize Pool Hits $1 Million
After some beefy community contributions towards its prize pool, Hi-Rez has announced yesterday that the total pot for SMITE World Championship this year has reached $1 million.
The momentous figure could not have been reached without the community’s support who were offered special Odyssey items by the developer in the game; the cost of which went towards the prize pool.
This will be a model very similar to Dota 2 who offered its Compendiums to players that eventually helped the popular MOBA title hit a historic $10 million figure. Todd Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Hi-Rez Studios says:
As SMITE continues to grow, we are continuously humbled by how awesome and generous the SMITE Community of gamers is. The community has really rallied to support SMITE eSports, and we look forward to seeing the prize pool continue to grow over the coming months leading up to the SMITE World Championship.
The developer confirmed that they will continue to offer the Odyssey items for the next fourteen weeks and so it’s probable that we’ll see the prize pool go even higher.
The SMITE World Championship will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, from January 9 to 11, 2015. The game was officially launched in March this year and already has over five million players. It’s themed around gods of mythology and offer a third-person camera, which is unique for a MOBA title.
