Activision Sells Over $500M Worth of Destiny to Retail and First Parties on Day 1
Activision has announced that more than $500 million worth of Destiny has been sent to retail stores and first parties on Day One, which makes this new shooter from Bungie the biggest new franchise launch in the gaming history.
CEO of Activision Bobby Kotick stated:
Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny. This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world.
The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.
Previously, Activision revealed that it has spent almost $500 million on the game including the development and marketing. The results of this investment started to show soon after the game’s reveal as Destiny became the most pre-ordered new IP in the history of video games.
The confidence that Activision showed in Destiny seems to be paying off as the demand of the game is continuously increasing and there was even one point where a special pre-order of the title was sold out in just few hours.
We will see how much Destiny is actually able to deliver, now that it is out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC.
