Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair Coming To PS4
If you thought that this week’s PAX is the last gaming event of the season, think again, because Tokyo Game Show 2014 is still coming. It may not be of utmost importance for Western audiences directly, but the precursor to the show, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia’s press conference, had some interesting reveals that could be good to stay up to date on.
One of the announcements comes from Bandai Namco’s subsidiary D3 Publisher, who will be bringing Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair to Playstation 4. It’s the first of the series to make it to the new consoles, though this could be a remake of the earlier release, Earth Defense Force 2025.
If you missed out on the series release earlier this year, you should maybe go look into it, because it’s an entertaining take on party-driven action roleplaying games. It’s a little like the Monster Hunter series, but with space suits and jetpacks and giant bugs and rocket launchers instead.
In that sense, Earth Defense Force leans much more towards the modern sentai genre, popularized by the likes of the Power Rangers. Battles are done in third person perspective around cityscapes, featuring giant robots and bathing in its own exaggeration.
It’s particularly enjoyable to take on this giant insect world in multiplayer, with multiple characters trying to crisscross their way through this grotesque scenery. Hopefully, the ported update will remove some of the framerate issues the latest version of Earth Defense Force had to deal with, since those can ruin the spectacle a bit.
Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair will be out in Japan in 2015. Localized versions have not been announced yet.
