The Witcher 3’s Developer Responds to “Heated Comments” on Xbox One-Exclusive Items
Earlier this week CD Projekt RED announced at Gamescom 2014 that the Collector’s Edition of the Xbox One version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would feature exclusive items. These were listed in the shape of a cloth map and two physical decks for Gwent, a card game that is played in the world of The Witcher 3.
The community wasn’t too thrilled in knowing that the PS4 and PC versions are going to be excluded from these physical contents. The “heated comments” left behind caused the developer to post a huge statement in clarifying as to why the Xbox One is getting the exclusive items.
“Looking at the heated comments, I believe that our announcement of the physical addition of two decks of Gwent cards and a cloth map, requires a further word from us,” began the statement.
“What is the reason? Why are we doing this? We need the support of partners to make our game visible worldwide. This should hopefully translate to better sales, which will in consequence allow us to do what we have been doing for the last 10 years, i.e. reinvest this money to make more great RPGs, while still sticking to our values.”
“If you still consider that adding two decks of Gwent cards and a map of the in-game world to the Xbox One CE equals us betraying our values and not fulfilling our promises, well, it does make us sad, but the final call is always yours to make.”
CD Projekt RED also reminded everyone that they are a studio which has always put gamers first and will stick to their promise of not having any platform or retailer exclusive DLCs for The Witcher 3.
From the developer’s statement it looks more like a deal was made with Microsoft that greatly helped them in the game’s development.
In return Microsoft probably asked for an exclusive DLC, to which CD Projekt RED declined. They then probably settled for the exclusive content in the collector’s edition.
Finally it’s interesting to note that the studio has promised more exclusive content for the game that will be announced “in the coming months”. Perhaps these will cater to the PC and PS4 platforms.
