Unreal Engine 4 Voted as the Best Game Engine by Developers
In a voting done recently in which more than 45 indie devs as well as other gaming industry experts took part, Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 made it to the top of Develop 100: The Tech List as the best video game engine.
Classed as a top-end, triple-A engine for titles like the upcoming Fortnite, Unreal Engine 4 also ranked #2 on the overall gaming tech list, surpassed by a credit card sized computer by the name of Raspberry Pi.
One of the possible major reasons for UE4’s appearance on top of the list is due to its efforts regarding Indie games and to promote it, Epic announced during GDC 2014 that the company will be adopting a $19 per month subscription fee so indie developers can utilize the engine.
Pretty bold move on Epic’s part, providing developers not only access to the engine which has powered amazing titles like Gears of War in the past but also the C++ source code for better optimization to release on platforms like iOS and Android.
Many other famous game engines also made the list including Crytek’s CryEngine at #11 and Havok’s Havok Engine at #17.
With the latest 4.2 update of Unreal Engine 4 adding Project Morpheus VR support for PS4 and PC it will be really interesting to see the technology being used on the Indie front thanks to UE4.
