SNK Registers ‘KOF’ Trademark, A New Game Incoming?

By   /   Jul 1, 2014

The last we heard of a new King of Fighters game was when SNK announced The Rhythm of Fighters, mobile based game that most of us were discontented about. We haven’t heard anything about it since, though another news has popped up that could be related to the fighting game series.

SNK Playmore, the series developers and publishers have registered another trademark, this time for something called KOF.

The trademark in question was registered in the early days of June with the Japanese Patent and Trademark Office. Further details, shared by TM, suggest that the trademark was filed under class 9 which is dedicated to videogames, class 28 which is slotted for accessories and video game machines’ parts and class 41 which is for online games.

We all know that KOF is the official abbreviation of King of Fighters and the trademark does add up to a healthy speculation about a new game. However, it could just be an attempt by the development studio to secure their rights to the use of the abbreviation.

Moreover, this registration is separate from the previous KOF trademark that they own. The previous one was about a logo and has an expiry date of 2018. So this is a totally separate thing and not a renewal of that.

It is not new for an installment in a series to be titled based on an abbreviation of the original name of the series so this might just be the developers’ attempt at making up for the resentment caused by The Rhythm of Fighters.

Keep checking back for more, we will keep you updated regarding the new King of Fighters title, if any.
