This year’s World Championship of League of Legends will take place in four cities, with the finals taking place at Seoul’s World Cup stadium, Riot Games announced today.

Group stages for the prestigious yearly event will be held across Taipei, Singapore and Busan. The grand final of the event will then happen on October 19 at Sangam Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. The mentioned stadium has had a historic honor of being used as the official venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and numerous other events. In total it has a sitting capacity of almost 67,000, which is much larger than last year’s Staples Center venue in Los Angeles with just 11,000.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re going to be hosting The Worlds on the road and hosting group stages in Taipei and Singapore in September,” the latest announcement reads. “The action will then move on to a quarter final showdown in Busan, Korea in October before the victorious teams emerge to battle it out in Seoul (home of defending champions SKT T1 K) in the semifinals and final. We’re looking forward to making our first stop in some of these regions and bringing the most talented League of Legends competitors in the world directly to local fans.”

The Group stages this year will feature a new sixteen team group setup with the following slots:

  • 3 teams from North America, Europe, Korea and China
  • 2 teams from Taiwan and SEA
  • 2 Wild Card entries

Riot Games had already announced last year that it would be hosting the next Championship in Korea. However, their plans of taking the group stages across Taipei, Singapore and Busan was unexpected. Korean fans are not too pleased right now since they would be missing out on meeting their western LoL heroes.
