Looks like the PS4 vs Xbox One battle is turning one-sided as far as sales victories are concerned....
How Crafting and Building Works in Fortnite
GameInformer has revealed more information regarding the building and crafting elements featured in its upcoming online action-builder Fortnite.
The game has three basic elements: wood, stone and metal. Everything that you build in the world of Fortnite, will require one if not more of these three resources. Hence, it’s vital that you keep on the lookout for these elements and collect them when exploring.
When you come across an object that yields resources, you simply use your pickaxe to strike it and the object will start dropping chunks of the relative element(s) until it is completely destroyed.
For example; hitting a tree with your pickaxe will net you chunks of wood, a boulder will get you stone, and an entire building will give you more than one element.
When the object is completely destroyed, it yields a secondary type of resource that can be used to create more powerful tools, weapons, and items through the game’s crafting system.
Using these three elements you can build four types of structures: walls, ceilings/floors, ramps, and roofs. Selecting one of these will give you a holographic version as a preview. Before pressing the build button, you are free to edit the structure to your liking.
All holographic structures show up as box grids. The walls for example appear as a 3×3 grid, and removing the middle square will give you a window in the wall. When satisfied with your structure, simply press the build button for the construction to start.
One thing to note is that Fortnite features simple physics and so if a structure is not connected to the ground, it will instantly fall apart. This can be troublesome if you construct your fort over a flimsy foundation that can break away in the night during an attack.
As for the game’s crafting system, you can choose from a long list of items and weapons to craft through a simple menu. There are no work-benches or something similar involved. All you have to do is open up a menu, point to a recipe, see if you have the required resources and craft.
Some items like weapons are available for free throughout the game. However, the more powerful versions have to be crafted and that is only possible if you have its schematics. These are usually awarded by completing objectives during campaigns.
Other than weapons, you can also craft traps as defensive measures for your walls, floors and ceilings. These can be combined to create, say a corridor of doom, much like we do in Orcs Must Die.
Fortnite is in development for PC and will release later this year.
