A 2D Prince of Persia in Development at Ubisoft?

According to a French Website Portail du Jeu Video, a new Prince of Persia game is in development at Ubisoft. The report mentions that the next iteration in the series will go back to the roots as it will be a 2D platformer just like the first few titles in the series and it will be powered by the UbiArt Framework engine, which is being used to create the upcoming game ‘Child of Light’.

The report also states that the game has pretty much been developed as different animations are being put in place, including the wall jumping and sword fighting which has been the core elements to the series.

The game is being developed at Montpellier Studios of Ubisoft, which were also reported to be working on the sequel of Beyond Good and Evil.

Last year, few rumors circulated, which claimed that a new Prince of Persia game is in development at the Climax Studios but then Ubisoft squashed these rumors by stating that they didn’t go beyond the prototyping stage of the project.

Previous release in the series was called Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, which was released in 2010 and got fairly decent reception from the critics, scoring 75 on Metacritic.

Maybe Ubisoft is trying to develop a 2D version because a lot of elements of the Prince of Persia series relate to the Assassins Creed series and there would have been a clash if both the series continued in the same direction.
