Torchlight Developers and Runic Co-founders Quit Studio to Work Independently

Many of us loved Torchlight and Torchlight 2, however, we will not be seeing the same guys make the next game in the series – if there is going to be one. Two of the cofounders of Runic Games namely Eric Schafer and Travis Baldree have announced their departure from the studio.

Baldree took to the official forums of Runic Games to announce his and Schafer’s departure from the studio that they helped create:

I should say from the outset that this is an amicable departure, that I consider the amazing team at Runic my friends and family, and that it is a privilege that they’ve let me get away with running the place for this long. I love them all, and the biggest downside to all of this is that I won’t get to see them every day. They are the reason that Runic has succeeded, and are the best group of people you could hope to meet or work with.

He further insisted that smaller scale independent development was the area that satisfies him on a larger scale and that he was ‘super-stoked’ about it. He will officially desert the office on April 2.

On the other hand, Max Schafer who is currently the CEO of Runic and happens to be Eric Schafer’s brother has sent out a positive farewell note to both Eric and Baldree:

As Travis said in his statement, this is a perfectly amicable parting, and we wish them nothing but the best in their new endeavour. I’m sure we’ll all be watching and waiting for what they make next. It’s sure to be wonderful.

It is a pretty smooth departure as you can see. However, it will be interesting to see what the duo have planned together. What could be the next project of the people who have been responsible for the two hit games in Torchlight series? Any ideas?
