Discovered in the decrepit, dark, dingy depths of Reddit and alliteration, was the (not) surprising intent of Rockstar to try to squeeze every last penny out of GTA 5 owners. Yes, microtransactions.
This user discovered an XML file reading “Cash Cards” in the store section of the GTA V menu. The file holds details about the Cash Cards, numbering four, which range from $100,000 to $1,250,000.
The description of the cards reads:
“Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”
Another Reddit user pointed out that the Cash Cards could merely have been created for testing or as another means altogether. Rockstar, of course, has not mentioned anything regarding microtransactions, but it wouldn’t be the first major game release to embrace the mobile trend, as Call of Duty Black Ops II did.
GTA Online will release for free as an update on October 1.
