FFXIV Online: ARR Marauder Guide – Skills, Traits, Jobs and Off-Class Abilities

So, you want to stand tall, with that big two-handed axe resting on your muscular shoulder, while you glare at the distant enemy through your nearly impenetrable shimmering metal helmet? Think Marauder, the most beefy class in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

FFXIV Online: ARR Marauder

With the impenetrable heavy armor and massive two-handed weapons, the Marauder class is all about dealing damage to enemies while absorbing it themselves. They rely on brute force in the battlefield, and are a highly intimidating presence for the opponents.

Skilled at taking on multiple enemies at once, the Marauder is the grandest tanking class in the game.

Recommended Race
The Roegadyn are by far the best candidates for the Marauder class. If they aren’t appealing enough to you (for reasons I would never understand), consider the Hyur race as a very good alternative.

Combat Role

The Marauder is a fully dedicated tank. The primary weapon of the class is the great-axe. Marauders rely on recovering health by dealing damage, and in their case the best defense is a powerful offense.

This class, alongside the Gladiator, is primarily responsible for generating a large amount of enmity, which keeps the enemies’ attention focused on it.

The Marauder’s function in battle is to deal as much damage as possible, and also to absorb as much of it as he can. Since many of the Marauder skills rely on health gained from damage dealt, the primary attribute for the class is Strength. However, Vitality also plays a very important role, and should thus be considered as equally important as Strength.

Consider going 50/50 in the first few levels, and then shifting focus on whichever one is required for your play-style.The equip-able weapons as a Marauder include Axes, Labrys, Bills, Tusks, Bhujs, Bardiches, and War Axes, though war axes are oftened the most preferred.

Once a Marauder reaches level 30, he/she can choose to take on the Warrior Job. This grants the Marauder further tank and damage skills that increase their effectiveness in team games.

Skills

The Marauder’s skill-set is focused on tanking by generating large amounts of enmity and healing him/herself with attacks. These also cover AoE attacks and single-target attacks, making the class capable of tanking in all kinds of situations.

The two key abilities of the Marauder are Bloodbath and Berserk. These two define the physical prowess of the character, and are major part of the Skill Rotation for the class.

Off-Class Abilities

Off-Class Abilities are abilities that you can use for your main class that belong to other classes, but are shareable. Every class has these kinds of abilities.

What makes Off-class abilities really good is that they give your character a lot of versatility, and are especially useful for those who are planning a solo journey. However, if you’re playing in a party, then it is best to specialize your character by going for Jobs.

Off-class abilities can only become available once your character has completed the class quest available at level 10. After that, you can choose to start off a new class, level that class to a certain point to unlock the desired skills, and then switch back to your main class to use those skills you unlocked.

Recommended Off-Class Abilities for Marauder
It’s difficult to use an exotic off-class skill with the Marauder without spoiling its main trait as a damage-dealing tank. If you’re playing solo, it’s best to look towards the Gladiator and Conjurer classes for the skills.

Lancer can also provide some useful defensive healing skills, but it is best to stick with Gladiator overall, since this can further be utilized for Jobs (even if you are playing solo).

The recommended off-class abilities from the Conjurer class are:

  • Cure (level 2)
  • Protect (level 8)

The recommended off-class skills from the Gladiator class are:

  • Flash (level 8)
  • Convalescence (level 10)

Skills Rotation

The following is the ideal skill rotation for the Marauder:

  • Heavy Swing
  • Foresight
  • Skull Sunder
  • Fracture
  • Brutal Swing
  • Overpower
  • Berserk
  • Bloodbath
  • Mercy Stroke

The last two abilities, i.e. Bloodbath and Berserk, work well together since Berserk gives you a large increase in damage, and Bloodbath returns a percent of that damage as health. This is your main tanking move to replenish health after inducing heavy damage and developing enmity in enemies.

You might think “that’s a pretty long rotation,” and yes, it is, but it’s important to under that the Marauder has to maintain constant offense on the enemies. Of course, this isn’t engraved on stone, so you can always do things your way if you find it more comfortable.

Jobs

The primary Job for the Marauder is Warrior. In order to acquire the job, you must also level a Gladiator to 15, while having the main Marauder class at level 30.

The Warrior Job limits the Equip-able Actions to those of Marauder, Gladiator, and Pugilist, meaning you cannot use skills from other classes.

Because they limit your skillset, Jobs tend to work best in parties. Do remember that as a Warrior, your main role in the party will be of a heavy-damage-dealing tank, and to generate enmity in enemies.

Combat Role
The skills of the Warrior are closely linked together, and hence should be used in Conjunction. This gives the Warrior a great amount of methods to destroy enemies with powerful weapon-skills and damage/health boosting abilities.

Skills
The Warrior skills are primarily connected to the first ability of the Job, i.e. Defiance. Defiance alone is a good tanking skill, but its debuff on your damage can be concerning.

This debuff can be nullified with the skills unlocked later on as the Warrior. These skills allow stacks of Wrath to be made. When five stacks are made, your character becomes Infuriated.

The following are the skills you can acquire as the Warrior:

Defiance
Increases maximum HP by 25%, while lowering damage dealt by 25% and increasing enmity. Using certain skills while Defiance is active grants Wrath. Each unit of Wrath increases critical hit rate by 2%. Five stacks of Wrath make the character Infuriated.

Inner Beast
Delivers an attack with a potency of 300. Ignores the 35% damage penalty inflicted by Defiance. Can only be used when Infuriated.

Unchained
Nullifies the damage penalty inflicted by Defiance. Can only be executed when Infuriated. All Wrath is lost when used.

Steel Cyclone
Delivers an attack with a potency of 200 to all nearby enemies. Ignores the 35% damage penalty inflicted by Defiance.

Infuriate
Instantly grants five units of Wrath, changing status to Infuriated. Can only be used when Defiance is active.
