Why War Z Became Infestation: Survivor Stories
Jeez, y’know I’m beginning to feel a bit sorry for Hammerpoint Interactive, as it seems that they really can’t catch a break no matter what they do.
The War Z which was supposed to be their gamebreaking MMO turned out to be…well, broken; and it’s been broiled in controversy ever since.
Even from day one they’ve been harrowed by insults claiming that they were ripping off Dean Hall’s rather fantastic Day Z mod for Arma 2.
The latest news is that Hammerpoint have been forced to change the name and brand of their zombie apocalypse MMO from The War Z to Infestation: Survivor Stories. This rebranding so long after the release is due to some trademarking issues that the company haven’t completely elaborated on yet.
Kewk, the community manager for Hammerpoint, had the following to say on the matter:
Effective today, The War Z has changed its name to Infestation: Survivor Stories. This change has come about primarily as a result of some confusion and trademark issues with a similarly titled property.
He continued on to insist that there would be no other changes apart from the name and logo, and the game experience would remain the same for their one million registered players.
Worthy of note is that Kewk never elaborates on what the “similarly titled property” is, leaving gamers to speculate.
There’s a chance that it clashes with the upcoming World War Z film, starring Brad Pitt. It could also be because of conflicts with Day Z which occupies a similar place in the gaming market as Infestation: Survivor Stories does.
Whether or not Hammerpoint was coerced into this change of name is also unclear, or whether they chose to rebrand because of genuine worry about clashing with other games.
