Need for Speed Rivals Announced for Current-Gen

Following a couple of teasers, EA has finally announced Need for Speed Rivals for a release on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this year.

The news comes as a surprise really. Where everyone is scrambling for news on the next-gen platforms, EA comes in between and announces a new title for current-gen. The publisher did mention that the title is being developed for the PS4 and Xbox One as well but didn’t mention any release date. The way EA handled the next-gen question, it’s like the next-gen versions will see to a release after the current gen versions have released.

Gothenberg-based studio Ghost Games is developing the game and will utilize DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine.

Rivals will see to the mixing of elements taken from both Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted. The new game will offer a similar open world and will allow players to take on the role of either a racer or a police officer. Customization for cars is of course there, as is the multiplayer element; specifically a new feature called AllDrive which lets players drop in and out of each others’ worlds.
