Rift MMO Going Free-To-Play in June

Fantasy MMO title RIFT will adopt a free-to-play model beginning from June 12th, developer Trion Worlds announced today.

While the game is going free-to-play, paid subscriptions will still remain a part of Rift.

Those who opt to play the game for free will be given “full access” to all current content, as well as future updates. Those who continue to pay a subscription will be eligible for a number of “Patron” benefits, including extra currency, increased mount speed and bonus experience.

Rift creative director Bill Fisher explained that business model switch came in response to fan feedback.

“We have been listening to feedback from our players and watching the continuously developing MMO community, and are now ready to launch Rift as a premium free-to-play experience,” Fisher said in a statement. “After taking our time and planning a careful transition; we are very excited to bring an enhanced game experience to everyone, without barriers.”

Starting from June 12th, the game will include various digital goodies in the in-game store, such as mounts, boosts, cosmetic items, etc.

Alongside going free, update 2.3 or Empyreal Assault will also be launched, which opens up a new zone for players to explore.

Well, they tried. Looks like no MMO on the market can survive the free-to-play revolution. Even WoW is starting to lose subscribers

With so many free options available, it doesn’t make sense paying a monthly subscription for a game. It’s a smart business move and probably will extend their survival….

If SWTOR can’t do it, I doubt there is much hope for games with paid subscription models.
