Square Enix Are Considering Same-Sex Marriages For Final Fantasy XIV

Square Enix answer some questions about the upcoming marriage system for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Square Enix confirmed the marriage system to come in a future update, but they had some interesting responses for fan questions.

Naoki Yoshida, one of the directors, said that he is open to the idea of same-sex marriages within the game, however Square Enix are still discussing things with themselves and the players and are yet to come to a final decision about the sensitive topic.

As for same-sex marriage, this is an extremely controversial topic that has been under discussion in the MMO world for the past few years. First we would like to start out with opposite-sex marriage, and then consider the feedback from our players in order to make a careful decision.

I can’t say whether or not it will be possible at this point in time. I’d like to keep dialogue open with our players as we deliberate the matter.

Yoshida also managed to answer some other interesting questions, such as the possibility of new races and clans and about the new housing features. You can read the full transcript here, or check out this video:
