Darkness 2 Crashes, FOV Fixes, Textures, Black Screen, Freezes

Darkness 2 retains the unique gameplay of the first game and introduces a new mechanic ‘Quad Wielding’, enabling the main protagonist to wield darkness and fire-arms at the same time.

You have the darkness by your side but to unlock the full potential powers, you will have to level up the Skill Tree, another new mechanic introduced in the sequel.

Like every game, Darkness 2 falls short of being perfect, so If technical hurdles are stopping you from embracing the Darkness 2 on PC, you can follow our troubleshooting guide for the workarounds.

1# Darkness 2 Doesn’t Run Or Crashes to Desktop
If you can’t run the game or running it results in a crash to desktop, you should follow these workarounds to fix the issue:

Verify Game Cache

• Go to Library of Steam and right-click on the game and choose properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Reinstall DirectX manually

• Exit Steam and reinstall the following by manual execution – \Steamapps\common\darkness ii\Drivers\DirectX9\DXSETUP.exe and \Steamapps\common\darkness ii\Drivers\VCRedist2008\vcredist_x86.exe.

For 7 & Vista Users Only:

• Exit Steam and run registry editor (Start Menu > Run, type regedit)
• Registry Editor, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE
• Right Click and choose permissions, tick the Allow boxes of Admin & System for Read and Full Control.

Uninstall PhysX Drivers

• Go to Add or Remove Programs from the control panel.
• Uninstall Nividia PhysX.
• Run the game so it will install the compatible version of the drivers.

2# How can I change the Darkness 2 FOV?
If you are not satisfied with the default field of view and want to change it, you can follow the workaround below to change the default FOV value to whatever you like. Recommended only for advanced users – Try it at your own risk, you have been warned.

1. Go to cheatengine.org/downloads.php and download/install it.
2. Run Darkness 2 and get to the game-play.
3. Minimize the game (alt+tab) and run cheat engine.
4. Click the “Select a process to open” button, it’s the top left one (scanning icon)
5. Select darknessii.exe and “Array of bytes” from the Value Type.
6. Input the following value into the box – 8C 42 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 34 42 01 00 01 and scan.
7. You will get two results, select both by holding the shift button and then click the red arrow in the middle.
8. The bottom panel will have the two lines you selected, select them both and press enter.
9. 9, The default fov of the game is 45, to change it to 68 you will have to change the 34 of that string to 88.
10. The value now be – 8C 42 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 34 88 01 00 01, you can change it per your needs.

Note: You may have to change your FOV after every level/round as this method does not change the game configurations.

3# The textures are missing/lagging (For Nvidia Users)
If you are experiencing missing textures or frequent lag while playing Darkness 2, you disable the AA through the control panel to fix this issue.

• Open Nvidia Control Panel
• Go to the game options and turn off the Anti-Aliasing.

4# Getting a Blank Yellow Screen (For Nvidia Users)
If you get Yellow/Black screen after intro, disable AA and change the global settings to ‘Let the application decide’ to fix this issue.

• Open Nvidia Control Panel
• Go to the game options and turn off the Anti-Aliasing.
• Also, try changing the global settings to “Let the application decide”.

5# Blue Screen of Death
It’s a rare issue but still if you come across it while playing Darkness 2, you can update your drivers and disable SLI/Crossfire because game doesn’t seem to work well with these settings.

6# Darkness 2 Black Screen, No Video
If you are only getting a black-screen with sound in the background, you should lower resolution and refresh rate for your monitor. Alternatively, you can restore settings to default through Nvidia/ATI control panel.

7# Darkness 2 Stuttering and Low FPS
You can tweak the advanced graphics settings to get a performance boost. Lower the details would help make the gameplay smooth. If that doesn’t help, make sure you have stable version of the video card drivers installed. Getting rid of those beta drivers may help.
