Saints Row The Third Crashes, Freezes, Stuttering, Sound, and Performance Fixes

By   /   4 years ago

Saints have arrived and they are ready to rock Steel Port in Saints Row: The Third. If you are experiencing any technical difficulties in causing mayhem in the city, you should refer to the workarounds below to resolve the conflict and continue your mission.

1# Saints Row The Third Crash After 100% Loading
If your Steam is installed to any drive other than ‘C’ on a multiple hard drive setup – You will encounter this crash and fix is to either move the installation to your C drive or copy ‘Saints Row: The Third Initiation Station’ folder from ‘Steam\steamapps\common’ to your C drive (Simply put it on your desktop. Run InitiationStation.exe from the desktop and problem should resolve – game should load fine.

2# Initiation Station Crashes
If above fix doesn’t work –

3# Sound Stuttering
Set your audio quality to 41Hz – You can do that by going into PlayBack Devices > Speakers > Advanced and choose it from the drop down menu. Or set the sound to stereo quality in your Audio Control Manager.

4# Initiation Station Messed Up Textures and Character Skins
Go to your NVIDIA Control Panel and change Anisotropic filtering to “Application-controlled”. If you are forcing any other graphics setting using Nvidia or Catalyst Control Panel, set them to default application control as well.

5# Saints Row: The Third Freezes
If you have a Quad Core processor – Open up task manager and click the Saints Row The Third executable. Now set the affinity to use only cores 0 and 1 or simply run the game in two cores to resolve the random freezes and crashes.

6# Saints Row: The Third Random Crashes
Try running the game in compatibility mode – Vista PS2 as administrator.

7# Saints Row: The Third ATI/AMD Performance Fix
If you are experiencing performance issues running the game with AMD cards – Use 11.10 drivers and when new drivers are release (Expected in few days) switch to those, since they will most probably be optimized to run Saints Row The Third.

Nvidia users can download the latest beta driver to fix any performance issues they are facing.

8# Saints Row: The Third Low Frame Rates (FPS Fix)
You can tweak the graphics variables in the ini configuration file below to squeeze all performance from your machine.

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third\display.ini

9# Xbox 360/Joystick Controller Issue
If game doesn’t recognize your controller, unplug other USB devices and try again. If you have Xbox 360 controller – make sure you have no other joystick connected to your computer or the game won’t recognize the Xbox 360 controller and there is no option to choose your primary controller.

10# Game Doesn’t Save
It does save when Mission Complete message pops-up. Other than that, your character status and check points get saved regularly but when you quit prematurely, you will start from the mission save.

11# Crash To Desktop
Running Saints Row: The Third on DirectX 11 video card and crash constantly ? force the DirectX 11 executable to run in compatibility mode of Vista SP2.

12# Low Sound When Playing The Game
You most probably have a micro-phone plugged-in and Windows is reducing the sound volume by 80%. You can change by going to System Settings > Sound > Communication.

13# Black Screen With Music in The Background
Tweak this ini configuration file to use your native desktop resolution and refresh rate.

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third\display.ini

14# Slow Loading – Or Stuck At Loading Bug Fix

  • Open up Steam.
  • Go to Library and right-click on Saints Row The Third and click on Properties.
  • Click on the tab “Local Files”.
  • Click “Verify Integrity of Game Cache”.
  • Go! play the game.

15# How To Make Saints Row: The Third Full Screen
If your game loads in Windowed mode, you can select Full Screen under Video Options to make it load in full screen, next time you launch the game.

16# Out of Sync Cut-Scenes
Possibly a driver issue – Update your video card drivers to the recommended drivers in the article above.

If you face any other issue, let us know in comments, and we will try to help you out.

FYI, you just outed yourselves as pirates. The game is Steam-only, even if you buy it on disc. Pirates don’t get any support. Also I’m fairly sure that the problem is that it’s a pirated, non-steam version of the game you’re using.

    Your system specs?

I have Saints Row The Third as well as the Initiation Station. My main problem is that I can’t get the Initiation Station to even launch. I just get the immediate “InitiationStation.exe has stopped working.” Has there been a solution found to this problem yet? I keep trying to search for a solution and it seems that I’m not the only one with this problem.

  • YoullNeverKnow

Everytime i start Saints Row The Third, it gets me to the screen, where is shown, that everytime i see something, it means game is saving. I tried many things, nothing worked. Any sugestions?

My character is black on Initiation Station Demo on steam what do i do i Dont have Nvidia OR Catalyst so what do i do?

I have found a solution to my framerate issues with the game. This may help other with similar or identical setups as me.

    My Setup is as follow;
    CPU: i3-2120 @ stock 3.3GHz
    OS: Windows XP SP3
    RAM: 4GB DDR3
GPU: Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1GB
    DSP: Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium PCI-e

I used to barely manage 15-40 frames per second with all minimum settings (640×480 resolution, everything at either low or off).

Then I decided to try out something I didn’t think would of helped at all. I turned on Hyperthreading in my system BIOS and WOW. Now I can play with scene detail at medium, shadows at high, and everything else turned on low at 1680 x 1050 plus 16x Anisotropic Filtering and 4x Antialiasing, and get 45-55 fps at 99% of all locations in the game.

Hyper-threading hurts the performance of many of my other games so it’s a pain in the butt to switch it on and off whenever I want to play something other than Saints Row. But I can’t argue with the HUGE performance difference.

I hope this helps somebody. :)

Alright… at first, it would crash instantly to the desktop with no error report or anything, when I tried to open the DX9 and/or DX11 versions. Now, it seems to load and run up to the AMD intro screen, and then does the same thing again. I can’t for the life of me, figure out what is going on. Lemme know if you know a fix. Thanks.

    Win7, 64 bit

Well i have a 64 bit vista pc and also a 32 bit vista and it works all fine on the 64 bit but on the 32 bit computer it wont save, it just says it’s stopped working and crashes. So basically on that pc i can’t make a save game.I’ve read the aboe and its not loading the save game that it crashes it’s when i’m making a save game. How do i fix this?

  • Doremon

I have the exactly same issue like Simo. It is almost stuck (or maybe 0.1 Fps) whenever i switch to fullscreen mode when run it in DX 10/11, even in the loading screen8-}. When i ran it in DX 9, i could switch between windowed mode or fullscreen mode w/o any problem

  • Simo

When I run it in DX10/11 version, 1280×720 res, I have a super low framerate, it’s so slow, unplayable.

When I run it in DX9 version, I can play it 1920×1080 without any prob except when I leave the gang customization menu, the game crashes.

Here is some info that might help

    os : Win 7 32bits
    gpu : Asus 4890 (latest driver 11/15/2011)
    cpu : i7 920

  • Yustas

14# wont work, still stuck at loading

  • Junior

Well i tried everything and still my game insta crashes at start up i got vista 32bit.. and it works perfectly on my bro’s pc with windows 7

  • Maniak

i have windows vista 32bit. and i tried all… and dont work … “stopped running”

  • Arif

About out of Sync Cut-Scenes… not a driver issue. Don’t know what is it though.

    My system is:
WinXP, intel core 2 duo E8400 (3.00 GHz)
Video – ATI Radeon HD4850 (512MB) with the lastest drivers
    4GB RAM.

If you’ll have a solution – please let me know. Thank you.

I am also experiencing the Xbox 360 control issue. I have it as the only device plugged in on my laptop and the game recognizes it at the start however. it doesn’t seem to let you use it beyond the 2 splash screens as soon as the menu appears the control is unusable have tested this on 2 computers so far same problem.
