Adrift Takes You To Neo-Paris of 2048

Dontnod spilled the beans on its upcoming console game, and it is NOT A PS3 Exclusive. Adrift is a working title – is set in a dystopian future where thoughts and memories can be digitally distributed. Developer puts it this way – It’s a simple extension of the development of social networking and geo-location at the beginning of 21st century.

Confused ? expect a game with ‘linear, driven experience, with lots of combat, light exploration and puzzle element’. Developer is still pondering the gameplay mechanics and trying to transform their vision into a playable game – which is a difficult job, mind you. Adrift is only 50% complete but it will be coming for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2012. Below is the extract from the official press release to give you an idea of the setting and what to expect from the game, followed by a concept art video – which shows stunning graphics but it’s not in-game footage, more like a concept art slideshow – so don’t bet on anything yet.

It’s Neo-Paris 2084 – Augmented reality and memory manipulation have taken control of peoples’ lives. You can now digitize, buy, sell or trade your own personal memories. The last remainders of intimacy have been swept away, in what appears to be a simple extension of the development of social networks and geolocation at the beginning of the 21st century.

The “surveillance society” has been accepted by the citizens themselves, in exchange for a few technological benefits. It is a reality that no one even thinks of challenging anymore. This memory-based economy gives an immense yet uncontrollable power to a handful of people…

DontNod was too shy to share more specifics details about the game but expect something more personal in near future. For now, share your thoughts on the idea and vision of the developer – Will they be able to pull it off ? gameplay remains their major concern and rightly so.
