Saints Row: The Third – Everything You Need to Know
Saints Row: The Third is the latest installment in the Saints Row series being developed by Volition Inc. and will be published by THQ.
Saints Row: The Third Game Features
Players will be in control of the leader of the Third Street Saints as the game opens up in the city of Stilwater. The Saints are kings of the city; they have ran out every other gang and the locals consider them celebrities and guardians. Now the gang is milking their fame by selling Saints-branded t-shirts, bobble heads, and other novelties with no other gang to compete against.
The game beings with the player(leader of the Saints), Johnny Gat and Shaundi robbing a bank in Steelport. The heist goes wrong, the saints are captured and eventually taken aboard a private jet owned by Syndicate from where the first mission starts.
Eventually the Saints land in the city of Steelport, a city in economic decline whose appearance is a contrast to that of Stilwater’s. It is filled with skyscrapers, warehouses and one-story apartments. Volition is including “numerous landmarks” in the city for players to easily determine their location without looking at the mini-map, and have said that the skyline is visible from almost any point in the city, so players will always know a route to downtown.
Naturally, as the city is in decline, both the Saints and Syndicate, being opportunistic capitalist see profit in rebuilding it.
There are three gangs in Steelport; Morning Star, Luchadores and Deckers. Morning Star are the suit wearing cream of the gangs, while Luchadores are the mask wearing muscle who roam the streets of Steelport, and Deckers are the nerds who handle the money laundering and High-tech security business and also STAG Unit (Special Tactical Anti Gang Unit) which is tasked with cleansing the streets of any gang, whether they are Saints or the Syndicate.
The game retains the third person sandbox , urban warfare format that is traditional to Saints Row series. The player, as the leader of the Third Street Saints, can explore the city of Steelport, performing main missions that progress the game’s story, and can take side missions.
These side missions include Activities, mini-games played on the streets of Steelport, Strongholds, rival gang bases that can be taken over to control a section of Steelport, and Flashpoints which are on-the-spot gang warfare locations. Successful completion of missions can earn the player in-game money, weapons, cars, and gang respect.
Unlike the previous games where respect was used to unlock new missions, The Third uses respect similar to XP which the player can spend to improve specific skills of their character, such as melee combat or firearms skills. When players earn enough XP their characters rank up, unlocking new abilities and skills for players to choose. Players can also choose to skip upgrading specific skill, instead melee combat players can upgrade their weapon based combat saving them XP points and Money.
You will be spending money to buy clothing items, weapons and cars, or to upgrade weapons and cars with unique features, such as adding scopes or extra barrels to a weapon, which then can be stored in the Saints’ arsenal. Cars can also be upgraded by tuning the engines, adding spoilers, after market bumpers or add underglow for aesthetic purposes.
Money can also be used to upgrade the Saints gang, customizing their appearance, outfits, and headquarters.
Within The Third, the player can set up to four different appearance styles for their gang. Players can also change the look of their characters anytime at specific plastic surgery locations within the game.
Finally, money is also used to purchase shops and other properties within Steelport which help in extending the Saints turf and also provides a steady stream of income for the gang.
Saints Row: The Third features the usual arsenal of weapons Pistols, SMG’s, Rocket launchers, Grenades and Rifles etc. But that said, it also comes with non traditional weapons, One such weapon is the “Giant Sex Toy” which can be used to humiliate enemies by clubbing them with this weapon and watching blood being sprayed all over the place.
Air strikes with smart bombs as well as predator drones are also available for the player to use and clear up areas crawling with baddies. Saint Rows: The Third also has dedicated button for grenades allowing the players to grenade anyone on a whim.
Unlike the previous games in the Saints Row series the story for each gang is interrelated and completing missions for one gang will impact how other gangs see and respond to the Saints. This creates a sense of cohesion for the main story as the players know what is happening and what next to expect. This way they could play the way they want.
Another nifty feature in Saints Row: The Third is the interaction the players have with the environment, the players can literally change the sky line of Steelport by leveling buildings while playing a story mission, for instance when given the opportunity to complete a mission.
As opposed to the previous games the health now regenerates automatically when the players is stationary as opposed to going to a food location and eating to replenish the lost health. The competitive multiplayer has also been dropped in Saints Row: The Third due to the fact it couldn’t make a mark in the previous two games. Instead Voiliton has added a Co-op experience mode enabling every mission and activity to be played alongside with a friend with full support for joining and leaving at any point in time.
The games engine also provides new animation for the characters, for instance there are several new carjacking animations for the character. If the character is at the side of the car , the character breaks the window and enters it while sending the original driver hurtling from the other side. If the character is running head on towards a car and tries to jack it, he will jump from the hood and kick the driver in the face etc.
The game’s vehicles also have highly specific damage zones that crumple according to how hard the player hits them. In other words, slowly edging into a car in front might leave a slight ding, ramping up the speed might cause a sizable dent, and ramming it at full speed will leave the hood looking like an elephant just sat on it.
Till now a few details have been confirmed regarding the game’s impending release, but gamers can expect a lavishly detailed sandbox world and larger-than-life criminal characters. Which would result in massive grins and loads of hysterical laughter while running down grannies, chopping people in half for no apparent reason and just causing mayhem to get rid of all the day’s frustration.
Saints Row: The Third is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
